Irish Political Cartoons

About this collection

The goal of this digital library was to digitize two political cartoon collections at the American Catholic History Research Center and University Archives (ACUA) in order to enhance access to these collections, preserve the fragile newsprint, and create item level descriptions of these cartoons. These two collections are the Irish Home Rule Political Cartoons and the Irish Repeal Campaign Cartoons. Dating from 1843-1888, the Irish Home Rule Political Cartoon collection contains 106 political cartoons from The Weekly Freeman and United Ireland newspapers. These cartoons are of great historic value as they document the Irish Home Rule Movement, or the movement for an independently governed Ireland. Dating from 1844, the Irish Repeal Campaign Cartoons contains four cartoons illustrating opposing attitudes to the 1801 Act of Union, which created a legislative union between England and Ireland. By creating a digital library of these historically significant and visually interesting collections, we hope to make previously little known and little accessed collections available online to The Catholic University of America campus community and beyond.
