About this collection

Through 1860-1865, the Union Army constructed 68 forts around Washington, DC to offer protection to the Union Capital. Some of these forts have received protection through management by the National Park Service, and other city and county services. Others have been overtaken by the growth of Washington, DC and the surrounding region. This project documents the current condition of each Civil War fort in the Washington DC metro area.
